Holy Baptism is the foundation upon which the whole Christian life develops, it is the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door to which gives access to the other sacraments.  Through Baptism we are freed from sin and, reborn as sons and daughters of God (Matt. 28, 19); we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church (Canon 96) and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and the word.”

The anointing with sacred chrism signifies the Gift of Holy Spirit to the newly baptized, who has become a Christian, that is, one “anointed” by the Holy Spirit, incorporated into Christ and empowered to share in the three-fold mission of Christ; Priest, Prophet and King.

The qualifications of the Godparent(s) are:

1.  Fully initiated into the church, that is, must be baptized, confirmed and received first holy communion.
2.  Be at least 16 years of age.
3.  One need not be married, but if so, must be married by the Catholic Church.  If single, must be living a single life.
4.  Must be an active Catholic.
5.  Must be someone who would be a role model for the child or elect. Living in close proximity to the child or elect is highly desired for effective guidance.
