A lector is anyone or lay minister who proclaims the word of God at liturgical celebrations. People who undertake this ministry need to proclaim the word clearly and with proper enunciation without adding or subtracting from the word of God. The lector helps in carrying the Book of the Gospel at Mass (where there is one available) in the absence of a deacon. The lectors proclaim the readings that proceed the Gospel observing all the necessary silences therein. They may also help with the prayer of the faithful in the absence of the deacon or according to pastoral needs.
